Youth Advisory Board

Mission Statement:

The NWHA Youth Advisory Board inspires and empowers high school students to engage with women’s history through education, advocacy, and community building, creating pathways for young people to learn about the role of women throughout history and build connections with peers and mentors that share similar goals.

The goals of this board are to: host public facing programs that foster a love of women’s history in youth; build a community of young people who support one another through mentorship and shared interests in youth-led programs; and empower young people through education about women’s history.

Brooke Soderbery
Board Co-Chair

Brooke Soderbery is a Co-Chair of the NWHA Youth Advisory Board and a senior at Sacred Heart Preparatory.

Her passion for women's history developed through her involvement and leadership in a campaign to create a standalone AP United States Women's History (WAPUSH) course. Last summer, Brooke deepened her commitment to feminist educational activism as an intern at Girls Learn International, a high school educational program run by the Feminist Majority Foundation. She’s additionally interested in the academia side of women’s history, and has published research on the historical involvement of the Catholic Church in American abortion policy in The Schola. At Sacred Heart Prep, Brooke serves as Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper and Secretary General of the Model UN Club, where she continues to pursue her passion for journalism and civic engagement.

Alondra Flores
Board Co-Chair

Alondra Flores is Co-Chair of the NWHA Youth Advisory Board and serves on the Civics Committee.

She is a junior at Sacred Heart Preparatory High School. Her love for reading and history in second grade ignited her passion for women’s history and service. She took a pilot course for AP Women’s US History last year where she was able to get involved in the WAPUSH campaign. This opened the door for her to have opportunities to educate herself on where women in government and the country stand today. Her passion for the pursuit of women's equality has continued to grow through her role as a primary leader for the Sacred Heart 'Women' s Group’ and presenting about the WAPUSH campaign at the 2025 National Women's Studies Association Conference in Puerto Rico. During her time in Puerto Rico she continued to explore her identity as a Latina woman.

Geneva Williams

Geneva Williams is Co-Chair of the Social Justice/Consciousness Raising committee and College liaison for the NWHA Youth Advisory Board.

She is a senior at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor studying Political Science and Women’s and Gender Studies. She is committed to documenting and working towards educational inclusion through a multitude of projects, one of which is service as Co-Director of Oral History Projects for the organization Women’s History in High School. Through her involvement with the organization, she is involved in the campaign for an AP Women’s United States History course, otherwise known as WAPUSH. At the University of Michigan, she currently serves as Co-Chair of the Classes subcommittee on the Student Advisory Board for the Inclusive History Project where she contributes to documenting the history of inclusion and exclusion at the three U of M campuses.

Madeline Carrell

Madeline Carrell is a Co-Chair of the Social Justice/Consciousness Raising committee for the NWHA Youth Advisory Board.

She is a sophomore at Hanover Park High School in New Jersey and excited to participate in such an organization. With her passion for women’s rights and history stemming from various courses like AP World, APUSH, and AP Government and Politics along with various leadership programs like Brown Pre-College Women and Leadership course, she has been able to explore various opportunities in relation to women’s history, women's social justice and leadership. Servings as an elected officer for her schools chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, the Opinions Section Editor of her school newspaper, a founding member of her school's Model UN program, an attorney and chief-executive in the Mock Trial Club and secretary of Hornets for Humanity (a service organization), Maddy works very hard are staying involved and continuing her passion for law and justice!

Karuna Mukkamalla

Karuna Mukkamalla is a member of the NWHA Youth Advisory Board.

She is currently a junior at a small high school in the Bay Area and has previously attended The Girls’ Middle School and The Nueva School. Being a Girl Scout throughout her childhood gave her a passion for being part of female-dominated spaces and ventures. As a result of this, she carried her passion into middle school where she co-led a club chapter of Girls Learn International with a focus on educating her peers about current and past events relating to women. Currently, she interns with the Palo Alto chapter of the League of Women Voters working on social media and digital promotional design. She is also an avid participant in multiple Youth Community Service programs including being a Peer Leader and now Peer Mentor through their Youth Connect program, which awarded her the organization’s Peer Leadership Award in May 2025. Through the NWHA Youth Advisory Board, Karuna is part of events/fundraising and social media marketing committees and hopes to incorporate her passions for marketing and community service into new endeavors.

Sadie Newell

Sadie Newell is a member of the NWHA Youth Advisory Board. She is a junior at Fishers High School in Fishers, Indiana.

She grew her passion for history through her participation in AP World, APUSH, and AP Art History. These courses led her to explore advanced opportunities for women to be featured in educational classes and learning. Her involvement in Fishers Mayors Youth Academy and various other academic endeavors, along with helping run her high school’s lacrosse team have allowed her to both grow as a leader, as well as speak out for change in the classroom and beyond. She hopes to see women highlighted as more than a background fact for students to check off. Additionally, Sadie is part of the campaign for WAPUSH (Women's AP US history), which aids her main goal, women in the forefront of education, something she hopes to see when she eventually becomes a United States history teacher.
