Performance Description: THE LEGENDARY LADIES, with 22 members portraying over 50 characters, showcase the lives of historical women who impacted the West. One of those is Ellis Meredith, Suffragist, who not only helped Colorado’s female population gain the right to vote in 1893 (Colorado was the first state in the Union to grant woman suffrage as voted on by male residents) but also campaigned for the national amendment.

A single presentation of Unconventional Women of the West features three to six or more performers. Each historically accurate monologue is 6-9 minutes long. All formats feature a costumed announcer, who acts as the emcee. By providing several vignettes during a single performance, audiences learn about a variety of extraordinary ladies and are often inspired to read more about the characters.

A sampling of other strong females in the West portrayed include:

  • Julia Archibald Holmes-Mountaineer/Suffragist
  • Nellie Tayloe Ross-First Woman Governor in US
  • Mother Jones-Labor Activist
  • Frances Wisebart Jacobs-Mother of Charities
  • Emily Griffith-Pioneer Educator

Members research the lives of unique women—from those who were born in the West, to immigrants, and visitors—write their scripts, create their era-appropriate costumes, and then portray, in first-person living history, their spirited stories in an entertaining and educational format.

THE LEGENDARY LADIES, a non-profit organization, performs in a variety of settings and serves any community or private organization interested in hearing women’s true tales of the West. For over 25 years, audiences have been enlightened and enriched when they hear about females who have made significant contributions to the history of the West. They learn how each made their own choices and worked through difficult times – empowering themselves and future generations to achieve and lead.
