Description: Florence Brooks Whitehouse was a Maine suffrage leader from 1914 until women won the right to vote in 1920. This presentation gives an important insight into the woman suffrage movement, including the obstacles Florence faced, the negative response to the “radical” actions of the National Woman’s Party (NWP), the US entry into WW I, and the political intrigues of the anti-suffragists and the liquor lobby that sought to deny voting rights for women.

A typical talk would last from 30-40 minutes and the presentation draws from Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage, which the author published in 2014. The author, who is Florence Brooks Whitehouse’s great-granddaughter, will discuss Whitehouse’s early childhood and its influence upon her work with the National Woman’s Party (NWP), the Maine Woman’s Suffrage Association (MWSA) and the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association (NAWSA.)

The length of the talk and the focus can be somewhat flexible depending on the needs and interests of the audience. It is suitable for libraries, historical societies, women’s groups, and high school and college students. A slide show that includes period photos and other key information helps illustrate the presentation. For more information on Whitehouse see www.florencebrookswhitehouse.com.
