Beginning with the story of Annie’s impoverished early life, including how Annie overcame her own disenfranchisement during her days in an asylum. As an orphan child of Irish immigrants who was visually impaired, Annie had to prevail against stereotypes and societal expectation. She would have festered illiterate in the asylum where she was left at the age of ten, had she not been so bold to beg the visiting dignitaries them to send her to school.

Annie is illustrative of those audacious woman who quietly alter history’s course by their attentions and stewardship of others abilities and talents. Annie understood the consequences of oppressed voice. Once Annie freed Helen’s voice through teaching her a communication system, they worked ceaselessly as social justice activist.

“Annie” inspires listener to forebear in efforts for justice, particularly in the realm of education. Helen said that the day she met Annie was the day of her souls birthday. This performance inspires and affirms how by acknowledging and affirming every ones voice the work is a more just and humane place.
